Make an informed claiming decision for your household.
Claiming timing affects monthly retirement benefits and when payments begin. A larger monthly payment and the largest lifetime household benefit are different goals. Health, longevity assumptions, income needs, and spouse or survivor benefits can affect the decision.
Understand the timing choices
Retirement benefits can generally start at age 62, with a reduction for claiming before full retirement age. Full retirement age depends on birth year. Delayed retirement credits may increase a retirement benefit after full retirement age, but those credits stop at age 70.
Think beyond one person’s payment
Review each spouse’s benefits and the household’s income after a death. Spousal and survivor benefits have their own rules. Do not assume that waiting improves every type of benefit in the same way.
Include work and other resources
Work before full retirement age may affect benefits under the earnings test. Drawing on savings while delaying benefits also has consequences. Taxes and the household’s need for accessible resources belong in the discussion.
Keep Medicare separate
Delaying Social Security retirement benefits does not automatically allow someone to delay Medicare without consequences. Review Medicare enrollment rules independently, including whether a Special Enrollment Period applies.
Use your official record
Check your earnings record and estimates with the Social Security Administration. Discuss the assumptions behind any comparison. No claiming age is presented here as universally best, and no benefit-maximization outcome is promised.
