Create a foundation of income you can count on.
Predictable payments may help cover recurring expenses. Before relying on any guarantee, identify who makes the promise, what conditions apply, how long it lasts, and what is outside its scope.
Different sources carry different promises
Social Security provides statutory benefits under government program rules. It is not an insurance-carrier contract and remains subject to eligibility and changes in law.
Pensions provide benefits under the applicable plan. Survivor elections, sponsor obligations, and any protections depend on the type of pension and its rules.
Annuities may offer fixed interest, periodic payments, or qualifying lifetime income features. Guarantees depend on the issuing insurer’s claims-paying ability and the contract terms. They are not federally insured bank deposits.
Investment withdrawals depend on the assets and withdrawal approach. A regular distribution schedule does not itself create a lifetime income guarantee.
Where insurance contracts may fit
Fixed annuities, fixed indexed annuities with applicable income features, guaranteed lifetime withdrawal benefits, and lifetime income annuities have different structures. Not all annuities provide lifetime income. An optional rider may have a separate charge, restrictions, and conditions. An indexed annuity’s crediting formula is not direct ownership of the index.
Consider the whole household
Compare single- and joint-life arrangements, survivor benefits, and income after the first spouse dies. Ask what money remains accessible and what benefits remain for beneficiaries.
Review the trade-offs
Consider surrender charges, withdrawal limits, taxes, rider fees, insurer risk, inflation, and the opportunity cost of committing funds. A contractually guaranteed payment can be useful without guaranteeing the success of the entire retirement plan.
